I headed out to take a little break and take the dog around the block today and walked right into the middle of an attempted suicide. Right next door to my building is a radio tower where a naked man was balancing on the very top railing and, in between making tarzan calls and singing, he shouted about how cruel the world is and how he wished he was never born. At the same time people swarmed from blocks away toward him with cameras, screaming things like, "jump, you pussy!", eager to get that one horrible, youtube worthy shot. I don't know who had less respect for life..the man or the people watching.

I have always loved the line from Lewis Caroll, "..it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!" That was the inspiration for the painting above and words that always ring in my head while I work.

The release party for the artist portrait book I'm in is this Thursday in Downtown LA. Hope you can make it out. That is how the bible goes, right? I haven't read it in a while. Anyway..most of the sketches are done for the coming shows in the fall. I'll be showing in a fair in LA in September that should be pretty huge and also a great fair in London in October. Process shots and more info will come as the journey progresses.

I haven't posted about it in a good while but if you haven't heard of sketch theatre yet, you're missin out. It's a ton of fun to sit and watch great artists doodle it out while listening to some pretty sick bands.

The new news is that they've just put together a really nice book with all their favorite drawings so far and I am very happy to be included. And what's the best reason to put out a book?...that's correct...a release party. There will of course be great music, figure drawing, a silent auction, and free booze. So if you are around LA on July 16th, come have a drunk with me.

I am also honored to be included in the very nice, limited release book, Heroes & Villains. Roman Cho and Tatiana Wills have spent years photographing their favorite up and coming artists and all the portraits are now compiled in a sweet hard cover that you can purchase here.

For the 800+ people that added me on facebook and have never interacted with me on there, chances are you are not getting any of my updates. Most of the time, im updating about shows or just re-posting links to my blog so if you want to stay in touch, read this over:

The "New Facebook" has a newsfeed setting that by default is automatically set to show ONLY posts from people who you've recently interacted with or interacted the most with (which would be limited to the couple of weeks just before people started switching to the new profile). So in other words, for both business and personal pages, unless your friends/fans commented on one of your posts within those few weeks or vice versa - you are now invisible to them and they are invisible to you!!

HERE'S THE FIX: On the homepage click the "Most Recent" title on the right of the Newsfeed, then click on the drop down arrow beside it and select "Edit Options", click on "Show Posts From" and change the setting to "All Of Your Friends and Pages" (you can also access the "Edit Options" link at the very bottom of the facebook homepage on the right) Note: Business pages do not have a newsfeed however page owners should adjust the settings on their personal accounts.

The good news is: you can now view all of your friends and fans again. The bad news is: YOU ARE STILL INVISIBLE to a large portion of your list. You must get the word out to ALL of your friends and fans

The Garfield show last week was a ton of fun. As they say, the hundreds is huge! so I think the opening was more about the line than the art...and by line I mean the clothing line, not the mile long line out the door. But I grew up watching Garfield and Friends every day before school, I'm a huge fan of most of the artists in the show, and about a thousand new eyes got to land on my painting...so I was all smiles.

I've been hearing that people are a little iffy about the upcoming Garfield show. Maybe it seems like it cheapens the art(or artist)? From my standpoint, I'm just happy to be able to show at all. And I think this show especially will get a lot of new eyes on my work. But I dunno. I suppose I'm still new to this world and I don't take myself too seriously.

But that's not to say that I don't take each painting seriously. My goal with this piece was to paint something that captured the spirit of the theme, but to also create something that could stand on it's own. I wish I had a little more time to work on it..but I guess that's always the case. Nothings ever finished..just set aside for a while.

I'm a big fan of a lot of the peoples in this show. I hope everyone can get past the "shtick" and just appreciate the hard work the artists put into it. I know I'm proud to be showing with this group and I'm excited to see what everyone comes up with. :)

It's been a couple weeks since the opening, so I'm sorry for the late update. I can't begin to say how much I appreciate all the people who came out and made it such an amazing night. I wish I could have done it 10 times over just so I could have more than 2 minutes with everyone.

I'm also SUPER appreciative of all the kind words and support that I've gotten from everyone who likes the new work. I'm constantly working hard to grow and progress in this art world and I hope that it will continue to show in future work.

For years, Nathan Ota has been pursuing new worlds, both dark and fantastic, to explore in his paintings. Ota has used his stand-ins - a blind bird, a drunk monkey, a one-eyed robot lost in the woods - to travel through dreamlands that hold fantasies and tragedies.

In "An Unforeseen Homecoming," Ota's first solo show at La Luz de Jesus, the artist sets out on an expedition that lands him in the unlikeliest destination - the world inside the artist's own studio. The questions that greet him, and the answers that he finds, are at once simple and impossible, hopeful and heartbreaking, permanent and fleeting.

Ota currently teaches at Otis and Santa Monica College. This is Ota's fifth show overall at La Luz de Jesus.

I still have a couple months of long nights and relentless self doubt ahead of me, but I'm pretty excited for my upcoming show in November. I think I'm really benefiting from the switch to oils and I think it's going to be a big improvement from my last solo in LA...things are looking a lot better technically and I think I'm pushing my boundaries a bit more.

Spent the day at Disneyland today. Had to re-up my season pass. The world of color show is pretty dang great. Not a big fan of their womens clothing line, though. Looks a bit too familiar.

I have three new paintings in a group show at Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York, opening next Wednesday. I originally planned on having all the paintings be similar and sort of be a different part of the same story...buuuut time isn't always on my side. As I dive deeper into the oils I find myself taking more time and care with each painting and I'm turning them around a little less quickly than I'm used to. But I think the end result is getting better. If your in the NY area, make sure to check it out. There are a lot of great artists in the show and I hear the space is pretty rad. Otherwise I'll post some pictures after the opening.

My last sketchbook got swiped and I've been meaning to start up a new one. So when I came across this Sketchbook Project, I thought it would be a great opportunity. The idea is to get a ton of people from all over the world to fill up a moleskine and then send it back in. Anyone from a mother and her kids to a veteran artist can sign up. When all the books are back in they go on tour to different galleries and museums across the country where people can sit and thumb through them. I think it's a pretty great idea.

The only problem is that when the tour is over the books are entered into the permanent collection at the Brooklyn Art Library. I have a feeling when I'm finished filling up the book, I won't want to give it away. But we'll see. :)

There are different categories for each book. Mine is "Figuring you out". Seemed fitting.

Los Angeles, CA – LeBasse Projects is proud to announce, Familiar Strangers, a solo exhibition from Japanese artist Yoskay Yamamoto. This will be the artistʼs third solo exhibition with the gallery, and will mark his most diverse body of work to date. The show represents a breakthrough in work from Yamamoto containing both painting and sculptural work. The show will reflect a continuation of intimate
statements of self-expression that began in his last series of exhibitions.

Yamamotoʼs previous exhibition focused on the artistsʼ external struggles and experiences while Familiar Strangers is inspired by a detachment from oneʼs inner self and the rediscovery of ones true nature. Yamamoto states: ʻI feel that I am always trying to fit in with others instead of finding or creating an environment that will naturally accept me as who I am. With the attempt and effort to fit in, I feel that we lose a sense of ourselves and become a familiar stranger within our own bodyʼ

Using some of his iconic characters, Yamamoto adds new depth including a thematic use of flowers in the work. Flowers have been chosen because according to Yamamoto. ʻ…they carry the essence of growth, but also have such a fragile state.ʼ The cycle of growth, blossoming and decay echo the circular nature of his previous exhibitions.

I've never really gotten to experience the rest of the country outside of California until about a week ago. I didn't get to do everything I wanted and there is definitely a TON more to see. But what I did see and experience was pretty great. My buddy and I took a van from New York to LA, armed with 3 GPS devices, satellite radio, traveling mustaches, and fists full of drinking money. I'm a little paranoid about losing/breaking my camera so I didn't get as many pictures as I would have liked, but what I did get, I wrapped up in a nice little gif for you.

I'm about to hop on a plane to New York but before I go, I had to post about the ridiculously cool show going down at LeBasse Projects tomorrow night featuring none other than the great, Blaine Fontana. I was lucky enough to see the work while it was being hung and I think it's pretty fantastic. If you're in the LA area, definitely check it out.

And if you're in the New York area, I'll be out there for about a week so shoot me an email or something and we'll paint the town booze.

Los Angeles, CA - LeBasse Projects is excited to present, The Golden Record, an exhibition of new works from Portland based artist Blaine Fontana. In this anticipated solo exhibition, Fontana returns to the gallery scene after a nearly three year hiatus from showing.

The show is titled after the Golden Records placed on the Voyager spacecraft sent across the universe in 1977. The sets of gold and copper plated records contain sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth and are intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form who may find them. Fontanaʼs series of paintings are set to portray a snapshot of humanity and history of humans on Earth. The show will have a strong focus on humanity and its inherited argument between beauty and tragedy.

After an extremely successful few years showing in galleries from Los Angeles to Philadelphia, Fontana took a hiatus from exhibitions to focus on his commercial work and developing his conceptual process as an artist. Reinvigorated by the robust art scene in Portland, Oregon, Fontana has been working on The Golden Record for almost a year and is looking to show collectors a more serious and mature body of work.

So I forgot to mention how nice this book is. I picked mine up at the signing and was lucky enough to have the artists that were there scribble in it. It's a hard cover, about 12"x12" inches, super nice quality with a ton of great artists including Nathan Ota, Josh Petker, Greg Simkins, Yoskay Yamamoto, Tessar Lo and a ton more.

I just wish I had more recent work in there. I think I was kind of all over the place with my paintings when the book was being put together. But I'm just happy to be included. If you want to pick one up, you can grab one HERE.

And speaking of recent work...I'm trying to put together more art for ipod/laptop/ipad skins. Anyone got any favorites they think would work best?

After the show in San Francisco I think I finally have time to sit down and take a breath. Thanks to everyone who came out to the openings by the way. I met a ton of nice people and made a bunch of new friends.

With no shows coming up for the next few months, I'm going to try and explore and see if I can't break through my walls a little bit. I'll try and post as much of the process as I can.
